A large number of Sound Blaster 16 cards have a flawed digital sound processor on board that causes various crfative with MIDI daughtercards attached to the Wave Blaster header. So the distortion is generated before the mixer and cannot be removed. I just purchased an actual AWE64, but I would like to get this card working in case I ever build something slower and need a spare card.
